[this is good]
Here's a nice disjointed comment for you:
* I honestly would love to have mixed blood, but I'm pretty much as Belgian (Flemish?) as they come. No relatives abroad, nothing.
* Justified arrogance can be fucking sexy. Truly. I'm not nearly arrogant enough though.
* I've seen Paha maa and Mies vailla menneisyyttä. That's not much, but I did see a famous Finnish soap star once (though I can't for the life of me remember his name).
* I love reading posts like this.
I have to admit you have strange hobbies, finnish films?! :D
I haven't seen Paha maa or Mies vailla menneisyyttä, mainly because I think we as a nation dwell a little too much in the general opinion about finns as a grumpy, sad and silent bunch. But still, I hope you enjoyed the movies. Just because I can't stand them doesn't meen everybody has to hate them ;)
The arrogance, I think, probably has a lot to do with nationality, and a little to do with upbringing. My grandmum is a class example of a woman knowing what she's worth. She's told us (among other things) that a real woman doesn't get the mail without wearing lipstick. And remember girls, the man is head of the houshold, but the woman is the one turning that head!

XOXO,
Blueberry Pantie
...and I almost forgot. I think Belgian is seriously exotic! At least looking at it from way over here in Scandinavia :)
I'm not exactly the biggest fan of Finnish movies (though it's early days yet; I might fall in love with the next Finnish flick I see), but I try to catch as many foreign movies as I can, so there was bound to be at least one Finnish movie I'd seen, right?

"Paha maa" had its moments (most notably the death by vacuum cleaner moment that haunts me to this day). "Mies" I just didn't get (but then, when do I ever understand men?). I almost went to Pelikaanimies, but I couldn't fit it into my schedule in the end. Maybe that one would have been a bit more upbeat, as it is a children's movie?

Looks like your grandma has a very unique take on life! My own grandma is a woman of the "live and let live" variety, and she hardly ever offers any advice. (Unless of course if it's on health or food related.)

"Don't forget to keep warm with the harsh winter coming up! Running around in nothing but blueberry panties won't do you any good!" could be something my grandma would say.
