Don't my "witty" topics just blow you away?
We met with my cousin Nico and his grilfriend Corinna yesterday. They were stopping by Helsinki, and flying to Savonlinna the next morning to attend Nico's dads (and my godfather's) 60:th birthday. I couldn't go because my boss wouldn't let me have 2 days off. I know.
Anyhow, we spent the day with them, and I was very excited about getting to know Corinna better, I've only met her once before since my cousin and all of his family live in Germany. They only come to Savonlinna during the summer, and now they're all here to party. And I can't go. It was bad enough that I missed my other cousin's wedding in London this spring due to the second jaw-operation and my bachelor's degree (they even had a chocolate fountain. Crushing!), and now I am missing another big festivity because of my boss' lack of understanding. Anyway, getting to know Corinna proved to be a lot harder than I thought. She spoke great english, and that was really the only language we used, but she was just really really shy. Or she might just be a really private person. She was very nice all of the time, just not all that verbal. Let me give you an example:
"So. You're a teacher if I recall correctly, what grade do you teach? Primary... older kids..?"
"Primary."
"..."
"...and what's that like? It must be lots of fun though, I bet the kids find out new things about life everyday!"
"it's nice."
As you can see, pumping her for information was like pulling teeth form an alligator. Still, she seemed to be a real sweet person as she was a bit more outspoken around Nico. I'd be scared of freaky finnish relatives and their silent live-in-boyfriends too. Very understandable. Very german.
We went to this great place to eat, too. It was by the promenade, you know, the swankiest restaurants in Helsinki live by the promenade. They didn't serve anything else but salads since lunch-time (and apparently food-time in general) was already over. At a reasonable 3 pm. So we wen't for salads although I would've wanted real food (all you veggies can suck it.). They served the best salad I've ever sunk my fork in. It was huge! Heeps and heeps of chicken and parmeasn in my caesar salad (the chicken was optional, in case you gastrofreaks are objecting. I was hungry so I took whatever they would put in it), which by the way tasted incredible. Sami had a hangover due to hosting last nights bachelor party, so he was hungry as a horse too. He barely finished the salad, and I had to leave some of mine. Why this is such a big issue is this: I've never not been able to finish a salad, and I've never seen Sami eat just a salad and feel content without a burger or three on the side. It was fabulous. I'll take you all there sometime :)
Tomorrow is pretty exciting, I'm heading for another meeting about the thesis. It's starting to shape up now, but you're still not gonna get to know the topic in a while. Yeah, I can hear you all moaning.
